Vaetr
In Scandinavian folklore, a vætr is a supernatural create that guards the wild. A landvætr would be the guardian spirit of the countries, a vitta vætr was the sorceress and a bjarg-vætr was a helping sprite. It is tradition in Scandinavia to leave out offerings for the vætr as a thank you for guarding the lands. I still remember leaving a bowl of porridge outside for the landvætr during Yule as a child.
